Watch this 4-H Documentary, “Why CWF Changed Me…”

How do programs like Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) affect 4-H’ers? We asked delegates to answer this question…

Earlier this summer, we followed around delegations from Nebraska, North Dakota, Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, and Tennessee to see how 4-H’ers, coordinators and U.S. Senators could help tell the story of CWF. Watch the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqVC91emfs4 and see how youth are impacted by their experience at CWF.

Can you spot the Cherry County 4-Hers?

CWF is open to all area youth who will have completed 9th grade by June of 2016. Contact the Extension Office for more information or to participate.

Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium

The annual Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Animal Science Complex on November 22-24.  The symposium is designed to introduce youth to career opportunities and current issues in the beef industry, as well as offer education and practice in the use of leadership skills.

November 22-23, 2013  Freshman/Sophomores

November 23-24, 2013  Juniors/Seniors

The first will be geared toward freshman and sophomore students, held on Friday and Saturday. They will:

  • get more of an introduction to the beef industry
  • interaction with faculty about the current research, meat science, beef quality assurance, and marketing
  • introduction to careers.
  • will have the ability to put their team and leadership skills to work by completing a project
  • will have the opportunity to do an infomercial about beef and the benefits of beef in the diet.

Sunday and Monday’s sessions will be geared toward junior and senior high school students. This will follow the traditional route of NYBLS – more in-depth information about the beef industry, meat science, marketing and the opportunity to work with a professional chef. Teams will take in presentations, but will also have the opportunity to work with the chef to create a new beef dish utilizing some of the beef value cuts. The culmination will be presentations in a “booth” atmosphere where UNL students and faculty can also interact with the groups about their projects.

Six $500 CASNR Scholarships will be awarded to junior/senior participants! Room and all meals are provided!

To hold your spot in the Nebraska Beef Youth Leadership Symposium, complete the registration form at http://animalscience.unl.edu/ANSCExtensionYouthProgramNYBLS and send  along with a check for the $30 registration fee by October  21st.  The registration fee, after October 21st and no later than October 30th, is $50.

Career Portfolios

The Nebraska Career Portfolio is the annual record-keeping system used by Nebraska 4-H youth.  It is a composite of all 4-H and non 4-H projects/activities throughout an individual’s 4-H career.  The Career Portfolio is required for Cherry Co. youth to be eligible for many county and state awards.  Nebraska will select youth to represent the state at the National 4-H Youth Congress based on achievements outlined in the Career Portfolio.  Information is available at the Extension Office about forms, requirements, awards, etc.  If you need help in completing your Career Portfolio, call Jody at the Extension Office.  Appointments can be made to assist your club or small group with your Career Portfolio.  The portfolios are due to the Extension Office by November 1.
