Luck-of-the-Draw Collection

Any 4-H’er age 8 and up is invited to join in the 4-H Council’s donation drive for the “Luck of the Draw” on Monday, December 29. For those of you that are new to 4-H or the area, this is the 4-H Council’s one and only fundraiser for Cherry County 4-H. Items collected on the 29th are used in drawings to raise money during the Heart City Bull Bash on February 14. We will meet at 1:00 P.M., CT, at the Extension Office. From there, we will divide up and personally visit Valentine businesses to collect their donations. We will also be telephoning individuals and business not located in Valentine. This was tons of fun last year and it will be again, snow or shine! Money raised during the Luck of the Draw supports Cherry County 4-H awards and trophies, clinics, scholarships, leadership development, and project resources. Leaders and parents are welcomed and encouraged to help. We will need drivers! If parents are willing to drive, or 4-Hers can help with the phone calling and collection, please contact Maggie Cox at or (402) 322-0180.   Snacks will be provided.

2015 Communication & Expressive Arts Contest

Mark your calendars! The 2015 Communication & Expressive Arts (CEA) Contest will be held earlier this year. By holding the event earlier in the year, the CEA committee felt it would conflict with fewer activities and increase participation. It will be on January 24th in the auditorium of the Valentine High School, starting at 10:00 AM, CT. The important life skill of being able to speak before a group or to perform before a crowd can be strengthened by taking part in the 4-H CEA Contest. Divisions include speech, public service announcement, presentation, job interview, music and talent. Guidelines and the entry form is available at January 15 is the entry deadline. Entry forms may be emailed to, called in to (402) 376-1850, faxed to (402)376-2867 or dropped off.

Community Service Sewing Day

Here is your chance to show your Christmas spirit and give to our community. Join the sewing fun! Jody Wilson will be hosting a Community Service Sewing Day on December 30 from 12:30 to 4:30 at Our Savior Lutheran Church. 4-Hers of all ability levels are welcome! 4-Hers will be making lap quilts for the residents of Pine View Nursing Home & Oakwood Assisting Living. They will also make walker caddies for the residents of Cherry Hills. Material and patterns will be provided. Bring your sewing machine and sewing supplies. Leaders assisting Jody include Michelle Garwood, Bonnie Weaver and Kathleen Hines. Questions? Call Jody Wilson at (402) 322-3908.

Horsemanship Levels

If you find that you have a bit of spare time over Christmas break, consider getting a jump start on passing your Horsemanship Advancement Levels for 2015! Begin studying now for your written test. Cherry County will be hosting a District Horse Show on June 11th. I challenge all 4-Hers, age 10 and older, enrolled in the horse project, to pass at least level II and participate in the District show. Some classes require level III to enter.
