The 4-H Livestock Committee has made positive changes that may affect your plans as you consider your market projects. Changes to the 2016 Fairbook include

  • Livestock Sale – Exhibitors may sell two units with no more than two of any species of livestock. A market hog, goat or sheep is ½ unit. A market steer or heifer is 1 unit.
  • Market Goats – Weight requirements for market goats will be a minimum of 50 pounds and a maximum of 100 pounds.

Market Beef Weigh Ins will be held on February 7 and February 27 at Valentine Livestock Auction. Weigh-ins will be from 2:00 to 3:00 both days. Choose the date that fits your schedule. Calves need to be 4-H tagged prior to weigh-in. ID sheets, bills of sale and ear tags (or EID tags for State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben) need to be picked up at the Extension Office. If you have ear tags from last year, or tags still in from a feeder calf project, those can be used unless you plan on exhibiting at the Nebraska State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben. Bill of Sale and ID sheets must be turned in at the time you weigh. Make sure you have all required signatures. If you are planning to show at Ak-Sar-Ben or State Fair, DNA hair samples will need to be collected. Please share this information with any new youth that might be considering a Market Beef project, but haven’t enrolled in 4-H yet.
