Special Foods Contest

The Special Foods Contest will be held on July 6 at the Catholic Parish Hall. The first session will begin at 10:00 AM, CT. Depending on the number of entries, a possible second session will begin at 12:30.

4-H participants will have 90 minutes to prepare a main dish for a meal and complete a place setting. During the preparation time the judge will observe and score on components including: measuring methods, presentation of finished place setting, knowledge of nutrients and personal diet needs.

There are Junior (8 -10), Intermediate (11-13) and Senior (14-18) divisions.  For more information, contact the Extension Office.  The Special Foods Handbook is available under “Cherry County Project Resources” and entry forms can be found under “Cherry County Fair Events Resources” on our website at cherry.unl.edu/cherrycounty4h. Stop by the Extension Office if you would like a hard copy. Entries are due on or before June 30. An agenda with participants start times will be sent to 4-Hers after entries are received.

Cherry County Life Challenge

The 2017 Life Challenge is designed to help 4-H’ers learn more about issues related to Family and Consumer Sciences while developing problem-solving skills. The county Life Challenge will be held June 1 at the Cherry County Fairgrounds from 9 to noon.

As a team, youth will be presented with group challenges where they will problem solve and present a solution. Group challenges will be in the project areas of Food and Nutrition, Human and Child Development, Home Environment, Clothing and Textiles and Personal Finance.

This is open to all 4-H’ers ages 8 and older. Youth do not need not be enrolled in a specific project to participate. To participate, sign-up by calling the Extension Office at 402-376-1850 or emailing jdexter3@unl.edu by May 26.

Interested 4-Hers, 12 years old or older, are invited to participate in the state Life Challenge June 26-27 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Life Challenge is a two-day event designed to help 4-H’ers learn about issues related to Family and Consumer Sciences, explore career opportunities, compete with other teens from across the state, and have FUN! More information about the state contest, teams, practices and time commitment will be available June 1 at the local event.

Foods and nutrition workshops will be held on June 21 and 22 at the Nenzel Community Hall from 9:00 to 1:00, MT. 4-H Leader, Liz Ravenscroft will be leading lessons covering the projects Six Easy Bites, Tasty Tidbits, You’re the Chef, and Food Works.

June 21 – for 4-Hers 7 to 11 years old. Participants will learn the basics of measuring, menu planning, My Plate and food safety. 4-Hers will be introduced to, and learn about, the Special Foods contest that will be held July 6. Everyone will take part in preparing and get to enjoy a tasty Mexican themed meal (don’t worry, it won’t be hot!).

June 22 – for 4-Hers 12 and older. In addition to reinforcing the basics, participants will be learning new skills. This workshop will focus on hors d’oeuvres and artful ways of food presentation.  We will also be learning about shopping on a budget. 4-Hers will be introduced, to and learn about, the Special Foods contest that will be held July 6. When pre-registering, please include a new skill that the 4-Her would like to learn.

Pre-register with the Cherry County Extension Office no later than June 14. Cost of this workshop is $10. Carpooling from Valentine will be available. Transportation details will be provided upon registering. Volunteers are welcome!
